Formula E Update: Oliver Rowland and Sébastien Buemi Win Separate Races at the 2025 Monaco E-Prix

Jakarta, 6 May 2025 – Formula E returned to the legendary street circuit of Monaco for the sixth and seventh rounds of the 11th season of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. This year’s Monaco E-Prix was held as a double-header on Saturday and Sunday. Nissan driver Oliver Rowland emerged as the winner on Saturday, while Sebastien Buemi of Envision Racing dominated the wet track in Sunday’s race. Saturday in Monaco: Taylor Barnard on Pole Again, Rowland Dominates with Pit Boost Saturday began with Dan Ticktum of Cupra Kiro topping both Free Practice sessions. Qualifying saw NEOM McLaren rookie Taylor Barnard clinch pole position after Oliver Rowland, his rival in the final qualifying duel, ran wide and hit the wall at Turn 1. It marked Barnard’s second pole of the season, following his Jeddah E-Prix Race 2 pole earlier in February. Barnard led the race early, followed closely by Rowland and Nyck de Vries. By lap 11, Rowland applied pressure, and on lap 12, Barnard went off track under pressure, surrendering the lead. On lap 15, Rowland activated his first Attack Mode, briefly dropping behind Barnard before easily overtaking him with the help of the four-wheel drive system engaged during Attack Mode. This Saturday race also featured the season’s second deployment of the fast-charging Pit Boost. Cars were recharged with 600 kW of power in a 30-second pit stop, adding 10% battery. Barnard was the first to take the Pit Boost on lap 16, while Rowland and De Vries followed on lap 18, rejoining the track ahead of Barnard. As the race unfolded, Rowland battled Andretti driver Nico Mueller, who briefly led thanks to an early Pit Boost. De Vries, with Attack Mode, also joined the fight. Barnard dropped back, and after a collision with defending champion Pascal Wehrlein on lap 24, fell to 17th. De Vries’ energy advantage allowed him to pass Mueller, but Rowland, after his second Attack Mode on lap 25, reclaimed the lead from De Vries on lap 26. After 29 laps plus one additional lap, Oliver Rowland crossed the finish line first, earning his third win of the season. De Vries, the Season 7 Champion now racing for Mahindra, finished second, two seconds behind. Jake Dennis took third despite a 5-second time penalty, thanks to teammate Mueller helping hold back the field behind him. Sunday in Monaco: Sébastien Buemi Clinches Third Monaco Victory in Wet Conditions Sunday began with Jaguar’s Mitch Evans setting the pace in Free Practice 3. Rain soon arrived, and qualifying took place in wet conditions. In the first semifinal, both Oliver Rowland and Nyck de Vries went wide at Turn 1, with Rowland still posting a faster time. In semifinal two, DS Penske’s Jean-Éric Vergne and Maximilian Günther both slid off track, resulting in no recorded times. As a result, Rowland automatically secured pole position with no opponent in the final. Starting from pole, Rowland led the early laps, trailed by De Vries. The wet conditions challenged drivers from the outset. Sébastien Buemi, starting eighth, activated his Attack Mode on lap 3 and climbed to third by lap 5. Vergne passed Rowland on lap 5 using his Attack Mode. On lap 9, Buemi made contact with Günther in a battle for fourth. Rowland activated his first Attack Mode late on lap 18, dropping to third behind De Vries and Buemi. He attempted to overtake De Vries at Nouvelle Chicane but failed and was soon passed. Rowland then attacked Vergne and overtook him at Nouvelle Chicane, with De Vries also slipping by soon after. The top two from Saturday were once again locked in battle entering the final 10 laps. Buemi activated his second Attack Mode on lap 20 and passed both Vergne and Rowland by lap 21. He then overtook De Vries on lap 22 to take the lead. Meanwhile, Rowland was ordered to give back a position after a previous overtake on Vergne was deemed off-track. Nick Cassidy, who started 14th, surged through the field and claimed third after passing De Vries at Turn 5 using Attack Mode. The order held until the finish. Sébastien Buemi secured his third career win in Monaco—his previous victories came in 2015 and 2017. It was also Buemi’s 14th career Formula E win and his first since New York Race 1 in 2019. Rowland finished second once again, four seconds adrift, while Cassidy claimed his first podium of the season in third. Championship Standings After Monaco Oliver Rowland now leads the Drivers’ Championship with 115 points, followed by Porsche drivers António Félix da Costa (67 points) and Pascal Wehrlein (66 points). Porsche tops the Teams’ standings with 133 points, ahead of Nissan (126 points) and Mahindra (91 points). In the Manufacturers’ Championship, Nissan leads with 192 points, followed by Porsche (163) and Jaguar (115). Season 11 of Formula E will continue with two races in Tokyo on May 17 and 18.
